Dragons, herald and baron: what each one is really worth

Three timers, three completely different reasons to fight. Confusing them is how teams lose won games.

01Dragons pay later

A single dragon barely changes a fight. Four of them change the game, and the soul changes it permanently. That is why dragons are worth contesting early even when the stack feels small: you are not buying this fight, you are buying minute thirty. If you are behind, the right move is often to trade the dragon for something you can use now.

02The herald pays now

The herald is a tower, converted into a monster. It is worth exactly as much as the plates and turret it takes down, and nothing at all if you drop it in a lane that is already frozen against you. Use it where a tower is about to fall anyway, and the map opens for everyone.

03Baron is a permission slip

Baron does not win the game by itself; it lets your minions do it. Taking it without a wave to push, or with three of your team on the other side of the map, converts thirty seconds of buff into nothing. Take it when you can immediately walk at a lane, or take the free tower instead and leave it alone.
