Veigar Matchups and Counters

This guide is assembled by the site from match data and the game's own information — nobody wrote it by hand. Official and community guides appear alongside it when they exist.

Overview

This guide covers Veigar's matchups and how to adapt to them. Riot publishes no matchup statistics, so the matchups below come from the champions' own stats and kits: attack range, starting durability, crowd control and mobility. They describe an advantage on paper, not a measured result.

Strengths

  • Crowd control: Event Horizon applies a stun to set up kills.
  • Long attack range (550) for safe trades in lane.
  • High magic damage: Riot rates it 10/10 in magic.

Weaknesses

  • Fragile: Riot rates it 2/10 in defense.
  • No dash or blink in the kit: vulnerable to ganks without vision.
  • Mana-hungry early: spamming abilities leaves you empty before the fight.

Strategy

1Good matchups

Veigar does well against these:

  • Akali: Veigar attacks from 550 units and Akali from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.
  • Katarina: Veigar attacks from 550 units and Katarina from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.
  • Locke: Veigar attacks from 550 units and Locke from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.

2Tough matchups

Veigar struggles against these:

  • Malzahar: Call of the Void silences Veigar, whose damage comes from abilities.
  • LeBlanc: Distortion lets LeBlanc reach Veigar, who has no escape in the kit.
  • Ryze: Realm Warp lets Ryze reach Veigar, who has no escape in the kit.

3Synergies

Veigar works well alongside these, because their kits fit together:

  • Neeko: Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Pop Blossom from Neeko.
  • Shaco: Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Hallucinate from Shaco.
  • Gragas: Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Explosive Cask from Gragas.

4Adapting the build

The situational builds in this guide answer specific threats: Against physical damage, Against magic damage and Against healing.

5Playing against Veigar

If you're on the other side, this is what to exploit:

  • Dark Matter deals very high damage, but it can be avoided. Pay attention to the sound and visual indicator to be aware of when and where the spell will land.
  • Event Horizon only stuns units on the edge. If you're inside the spell, you can still move and attack.
  • Veigar's ultimate deals increased damage based on your missing health.

Tips

  • Look at the enemy team before choosing your build: the situational builds below answer the most common threats.
  • Good matchup: Akali. Play forward when you face them.
  • Tough matchup: Malzahar. Play safer and wait for your team.
  • Against slippery heroes, hold Event Horizon until their escape is used.

Matchups

Strong against

  • Veigar attacks from 550 units and Akali from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.

  • Veigar attacks from 550 units and Katarina from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.

  • Veigar attacks from 550 units and Locke from 125: every trade in lane happens at a distance they cannot answer.

Weak against

  • Call of the Void silences Veigar, whose damage comes from abilities.

  • Distortion lets LeBlanc reach Veigar, who has no escape in the kit.

  • Realm Warp lets Ryze reach Veigar, who has no escape in the kit.

  • Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Pop Blossom from Neeko.

  • Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Hallucinate from Shaco.

  • Event Horizon from Veigar holds enemies in place for Explosive Cask from Gragas.
